Prefixes: -un, -re, -dis, -bi
If you are here at the moment then chances are that your child has now come of age where he is supposed to learn about prefixes, what they are and where they are used. Well, if that’s the case and if you want to know how to teach your little one about prefixes then yes, you are definitely at the right place, reading the right content!
For starters, prefixes are words that are based before a base word. For example, in the word “Disconnect”, “dis” is a prefix that’s being used to change the meaning of the word “Connect. Similarly, there are more such words as “re”, “un” and “bi” etc that are called prefixes. These words are just used to change the meaning of a base word.
Its time for some more suffixes for kids. In this video, we talk about the suffixes -er and -ness. We know that suffixes are added to the end of words to change their meaning and to form new words. So, let's see what these suffixes can do.
-er
When we add -er to a word it makes a word that means a person who does something. For example:
• Painter
• Singer
• Player
- ness
When we add -ness to a word it means ‘the act of’. Which means that something is being done with some kind of quality. For example:
• Greatness
• Kindness
• Happiness
There are total of 6 types of syllables out there and if you are about to start teaching your little one about syllables then we’d recommend you to start with the open syllables and the closed syllables.It’s just that these are easier to understand and your kid will learn quite fast. Not only this, in fact, after learning these two types, your kid will be able to speak a hundred different words.For starters, you need to tell your children what is a syllable. It basically is a unit of pronunciation that comes with a single vowel only. Breaking Apart Words Worksheet
Syllables are the parts into which a word is naturally divided when it is properly pronounced. Breaking words into syllables makes it easier for people to learn to correctly say the word. There are four different words in this printable pdf. The words in this worksheet have been broken apart for easier pronunciation. Say each word carefully aloud, and then help your kids circle the word in the pair that is broken apart correctly to show the syllables in the word.
Counting goes past just counting numbers. By the time your students have mastered the art of counting up to a specific number, you can move to the next stage of counting other things, such as syllables. In this worksheet, there are four colorful pictures. Ask your students to identify and name each of the pictures, and then read the word for the image. Make them repeat the word after you, and count how many syllables each of the word has. Check off the box that has the correct number of syllables.

What does that word ‘meaningful’ mean? It is a word used to describe when a person does something that means a lot to another person. For example, when we call our friends on their birthdays to wish them a happy celebration; that is a meaningful act. The suffix –ful can also be added to other words to give them different meanings. Read the sentences aloud to your kids and help them check off the correct suffix to add to the word that makes it fit in the blank.
Words are broken down into syllables to aid with proper and correct pronunciation. Counting syllables is a god way to get your kids to learn how to properly pronounce words. The simple words your kids will be exposed to at this stage mostly will have 1, 2 or 3 syllables. This means that the words are small and easy to pronounce. Carefully say the words in this worksheet aloud to your kids. Have them repeat the words after you. Then, check the words that have more than 2 syllables.
