Daily Knowledge Boost with Kids Academy: Civic Studies for 3rd Grade

Learning about the way the U.S government works as a child in 3rd grade is very important to their growth and development.  At this age, children start to better understand more abstract concepts, introducing government structure helps them see how laws and decisions are made. It also helps children learn about their rights and responsibilities  building a foundation to their participation in society. 

Today’s daily knowledge boost gives children a chance to explore Citizen Rights’ and Freedom, Laws and Governance, and the Three Branches of Government.  

All the lessons can be accessed in the simple interactive Kids Academy Classroom interface. It allows you to use our ready-made lessons or create new ones, share them with your children and track your students’ progress.

Lesson 1: Citizen’s Rights and Freedom

In this lesson children will further explore Independence day, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.  Students will be introduced to the documents that have shaped the United States, focusing on the themes of rights and freedoms.

Activity Overview:

  • Independence Day Video: Start off this lesson with a fun video that teaches about Independence Day. 
  • Declaration of Independence Word Search Printable: Look for important keywords that are found in the Declaration of Independence in this search and find activity.
  • The Constitution Worksheet: Help your child  understand the importance of the Constitution of the United States of America.
  • Bill of Rights Worksheet: Go over the Bill of Rights to help kids understand the rights of the amendments with this fun worksheet. 

Brain Break 

Run through the levels as Captain America in this fun patriotic brain break that will get your child’s body moving. 

Lesson 2: Laws and Governance

In these next set of lessons children will explore the foundational aspects of laws in the United States. Looking at concepts like Laws, Rights, and Responsibilities students will gain a valuable understanding of how laws are created, why they are necessary and how they impact our lives daily.

Activity Overview: 

  • Laws, RIghts, and Responsibilities: Start off with a descriptive video that gives information about  laws, rights, and responsibilities as a citizen. 
  • Creating a Law Worksheet: Learn and review the process it takes for a bill to become a law using fun pictures  step by step instructions. 
  • Follow the Law Worksheet: Review the difference between common everyday laws and rules in the home.

Brain Break

Take another break with this exciting video that gets children’s bodies up and moving.

Lesson 3: Three Branches of Government

These lessons will give children the chance to explore the foundational structure of the American government. They focus on the organization and roles of the legislative,executive,and judicial branches. Children will learn how these branches work independently and together to govern the country.

 Activity Overview:

  • Three Branches of Government Video: Start off with a fun video learning about the branches of government. 
  • Branches of Government: Legislative Branch  Worksheet: Help your child understand this important branch of the American government by reviewing the leaders of the legislative branch. 
  • Branches of Government: Executive Branch  Worksheet: Help your child understand this important branch of the American government by reviewing the leaders of the Executive  branch. 
  • Branches of Government: Judicial Branch  Worksheet: Help your child understand this important branch of the American government by reviewing the leaders of the Judicial  branch. 

Brain Break

Finish the lessons off with taking  a break to stop and sing  the Star Bangled Banner. This fun sing along will allow your students to take a fun break from learning.
