One math concept that students spend a lot of time on, especially in 3rd grade, is fractions. Manipulating fractions is an important skill for students to master because it can build a foundation for more complex topics, develop their critical thinking skills, and help kids better understand more abstract concepts and establish connections across multiple subjects. 

Today’s daily knowledge boost provides students in 3rd grade with in-depth study of fractions: making and representing fractions, as well as comparing fractions through their denominator and numerator.

Lesson 1: Equivalent Fractions: Making and Representing Fractions 

In this lesson, children will be able to explore the concept of equivalent fractions on a deeper level. Through these activities students will have the opportunity to develop a better understanding of how different fractions can represent the same value.

• Equivalent Fractions Worksheet: These simple pictures help students better understand how a fraction is represented. Students will use colorful bricks to understand and compare fractions.

Fractions can be a source of a lot of frustration. So, before moving on to the next lesson, take a small brain break to help learners unwind and recharge. This fun song keeps the learning going but allows the chance to get up and move. 

Lesson 2: Comparing Fractions (same denominator): Making and Representing Fractions

This interdisciplinary lesson allows students the opportunity to practice comparing fractions that share the same denominator. Students will analyze fractions to determine which is greater or if they are equal through fun and culturally enriching worksheets.

• Compare Fractions Worksheet: Students will practice what they just learned in the previous video. 

• Mexican Cooking  Worksheet: Help Alejandra make pazole stew by figuring out the right ingredients with the greater fractions.  

• Korean Cooking  Worksheet: Hyun-Ki needs help to figure out who ate more of each dish . Students will compare the fractions and select the correct comparison symbol.

Brain Break

Another fun song to refresh your students’ attention while still keeping focus on fractions. Review the learned material and also prepare them for the next lesson in this break time. 

Lesson 3: Comparing Fractions (same numerator): Making and Representing Fractions

After students have had practice with the denominator, they will practice comparing fractions with the same numerator. In this lesson children will understand the role of numerators in fractions and have the opportunity for real-world application. 

 Activity Overview:

• Comparing Numerators Worksheet: Start off comparing fractions in different groups and identify which one is the greater fraction. 

• Comparing Numerators Worksheet: Children will compare two fractions in each set and figure out which is the greater fraction. 

• Scottish Sewing Math  Worksheet: Learn about Scottish culture while comparing fractions for the lengths of fabric needed. 

• Comparing Fractions (Same Denominator and Same Numerator) Quiz: Assess your students ability to compare fractions.   

Brain Break

Students will dance and sing to this fun song about fractions to conclude the lessons for today.
